Tu regere imperio populos, Romane, memento.

cit_00002

Text

Excudent alii spirantia mollius aera (credo equidem), uiuos ducent de marmore uultus,
orabunt causas melius, caelique meatus describent radio et surgentia sidera dicent:
(850) tu regere imperio populos, Romane, memento
(hae tibi erunt artes), pacique imponere morem,
parcere subiectis et debellare superbos.

Translation

Others will form softer ore statues that are more lifelike, I believe, they will create living faces out of marble, they will give better court speeches, they will use their staffs to describe the movements in the sky and predict the rising of the stars: You Romans, remember this to rule peoples (this will be your skill): to order the peace, to spare the subdued and to make war on the arrogant.
